What is ADHD?

ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects a person's ability to focus, retain information, stay engaged in conversations, and control impulsive behaviors. It's a condition that typically presents in childhood and can continue into adulthood. ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders and it is estimated that it affects approximately 5% of children and 2.5% of adults worldwide.

ADHD and Co-occurring Disorders

ADHD often exists alongside symptoms seen in other disorders. In children, ADHD is most commonly present with Autistic Spectrum Disorders or Learning Disorders. Accurate diagnosis is important as those children tend to have more severe symptoms and greater limitations.  In adults, 60-70% of those with ADHD also have another mental health issue, the most common being depression and anxiety. This tends to make diagnosis and treatment more complex.

Symptoms of ADHD

The symptoms of ADHD can vary from person to person and includes a persistent pattern of difficulty paying attention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, emotional dysregulation and functional impairments. These symptoms can make it difficult for individuals to function in daily life and can lead to problems at work, school, or in relationships.

Key symptoms and complications:

  1. Inattention: Individuals with ADHD may have difficulty paying attention, following instructions, and completing tasks. They may also forget things easily and be easily distracted.
  2. Hyperactivity and Impulsivity: Adults may be more restless, talk excessively or frequently interrupt others, make impulsive decisions and are more accident prone. This leads to trouble initiating and maintaining relationships, problems with consistent employment and more frequent health issues.
  3. Emotional dysregulation: About a third of those with ADHD have symptoms of nervousness, irritability, mood instability and low self esteem.  Their emotional reactions tend to be more extreme and feel difficult to manage.

As mentioned above, these symptoms can also be present in other neurodevelopmental disorders like autism or psychiatric conditions including mood and anxiety disorders. A proper assessment is key in obtaining an accurate diagnosis.

Evaluation for ADHD and Co-occurring Disorders

At Irvine Psychiatry and TMS, you will get a bio-psycho-social assessment of your symptoms.  While we do not offer any computerized testing, we take the time to complete a thorough clinical evaluation. You may also be referred out for more detailed neuro-psychological testing if appropriate. We take a whole person approach to treatment, and do not focus on individual symptoms.

Possible Treatments for ADHD with Co-occuring Disorders

There are a variety of treatment options available for ADHD, including medication, therapy, and lifestyle changes. The most effective treatment for ADHD is a combination of these options, tailored to meet the specific needs of each individual.

Four key treatment options for ADHD are:

Behavioral therapy: Behavioral therapy can help individuals with ADHD learn coping strategies and skills to manage their symptoms. This is always a good first step.

Skills training: This type of training can teach organizational and time management skills to help manage your symptoms and improve your success.  Those with ADHD will need to continuously refresh these skills.

Medication: medications can also be effective in helping to improve focus and decrease impulsivity and hyperactivity.  There are multiple classes of medicines that can be beneficial, stimulants are not the only option.

TMS: Early studies suggest positive effects of rTMS on ADHD symptoms. This can be considered as an option in combination with behavioral changes and medication.
