IRVINE PSYCHIATRY AND TMS - DR. ROULA CREIGHTON

What Is TMS Therapy?

TMS, or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate the brain. TMS is FDA-approved for the treatment of depression, and it is also being studied as a potential treatment for other conditions such as anxiety, OCD, PTSD, and chronic pain. TMS is thought to work by modulating the activity of neurons in the brain. During a TMS session, a magnet is placed against the head and short pulses of magnetic energy are delivered to the brain. These pulses induce electrical currents that can stimulate or inhibit neuronal activity. TMS is safe and well-tolerated, with few side effects. The most common side effect is headaches, which typically resolve on their own within a few days. TMS is an exciting new treatment option that offers hope to those struggling with mental illness.
