What are Eating Disorders?

Eating disorders are a group of conditions characterized by abnormal eating habits that can cause serious harm to a person's physical and mental health. The most common types of eating disorders are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder.

Common Types of Eating Disorders

It is important to note that these disorders have serious physical and emotional consequences if left untreated, so prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial. There are other subtypes and variations of eating disorder not mentioned here, but these are the most commonly diagnosed:

  1. Anorexia nervosa: characterized by a fear of gaining weight, a distorted body image, and a refusal to maintain a healthy body weight. Individuals with anorexia nervosa may severely restrict their food intake, excessively exercise, or use laxatives or diuretics to control their weight.
  2. Bulimia nervosa: characterized by binge eating followed by unhealthy methods, such as vomiting or taking laxatives, to prevent weight gain.
  3. Binge Eating Disorder (BED): characterized by regularly eating large amounts of food in a short period of time, often to the point of feeling uncomfortably full. The person may feel a loss of control during the binge and often feels guilty or ashamed afterward.

Therapy: Cognitive-behavioral therapy and other forms of talk therapy can help change thoughts, feelings and behaviors related to food and body image

Medication: Antidepressant medications like SSRIs can help with depression and anxiety symptoms.

Nutritional counseling: a registered dietitian or nutritionist can develop a healthy eating plan, address nutrient deficiencies.
